_WHERE YOU'LL WORK:_ Multiple positions at different classification levels are available within the Department of Taxation's Oahu, Kauai and Hilo offices.
_WHAT YOU'LL DO:_ The Tax Returns Examiner inspects general excise, use, withholding, transient accommodations, rental motor vehicle, and income tax return information for various taxpayer groups.
Such groups may include, individuals, corporations, partnerships, trusts, and nonprofits.
The incumbent examines return information to verify that all income, exemption, deduction, credit and/or refund claims adhere to the relevant taxation requirements, as provided for under Hawaii Revised Statutes.
Certain examiners may also focus on legal writing (IFRAC) and assist in the preparation and presentation of appeal cases to the Appeal Officer and Board of Review.

and much more! _WHAT YOU NEED:_ Required Experience: Depending on the classification level, applicants must have anywhere from three (3) to six (6) years of general experience and zero (0) to three (3) years of specialized experience.
General experience and specialized experience can be summarized as follows: * General Experience: Progressively responsible experience, including arithmetic computations, in one or both of the following: Public contact work experience that involved interviewing / investigating OR clerical experience that provided a familiarity with state and Federal tax laws and regulations, as well as tax work methods, practices and procedures.
* Specialized Experience: Experience in the tax field that required the application of income and other tax laws / regulations, as well as the use of procedures related to tax return preparation, tax liability determination and/or delinquent tax collection.
* Substitution(s) Allowed: Excess specialized experience of the type and quality described above can be substituted for general experience on a year-for-year basis.
Other education-related substitutions may be available.
